History
The shrine's origin is said to trace back to a large boulder where Empress Jingū rested on her return from the conquest of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which was enshrined as an Iwasé (a natural stone altar). It is recorded that in 713 CE (Hōki 3), white clouds rose from the stone and a child-form deity appeared. In 973 CE (Tenten 1), Kiyohara Masataka relocated the shrine to its current location and constructed the shrine buildings. During the Edo period, it received the reverence of successive feudal lords. In 1698 CE (Genroku 11), the shrine became a direct imperial domain and fell under the jurisdiction of the Hita Daikansho (Hita Deputy Magistrate's Office).

What visitors say
The shrine grounds are spacious with a small stream flowing through them, offering a serene and atmospheric natural setting. During the autumn foliage season, a massive ginkgo tree is particularly beautiful, with fallen leaves creating a carpet-like scene that is a major highlight. Other points of interest include the 'Aun' Kappa statues and the 'Sennen Sugi' (Thousand-Year Cedar), and the shrine also offers Goshuin (a shrine's calligraphic seal stamp).
