Unryuin
京都市東山区泉涌寺山内町36
Unryuin is a special head temple (betsugaku honzan) of the Sennyu-ji branch of the Shingon sect. It is known as a branch temple (betsuin) of the head temple, Sennyu-ji. The principal image (honzon) is Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha). The temple houses the Ryuwa-den (Dragon Flower Hall), designated as an Important Cultural Property, and a copy of the Lotus Sutra.
History
The temple was founded in 1372 CE (Oan 5) during the Northern and Southern Courts period by imperial decree from Emperor Go-Koyan of the Northern Court, with Chikugan Seiko serving as the founding monk (kaizan). Subsequently, it received donations and endowments from emperors such as Emperor Go-Enyu and Emperor Go-Mizunoo. During this period, it was developed as a sutra-copying dojo, and repairs and reconstructions were carried out on various halls. In the late Edo period, the imperial family bestowed the main entrance gate and the hozon (abbot's quarters) upon the temple. Additionally, the Reimei-den (Hall of Spiritual Light), where the revered tablets of successive emperors are enshrined, was rebuilt.
