Founded in 1691 CE (Genroku 4) by the preceptor Jōgō Kakuhiko, the temple was established on land granted by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi of the Edo Shogunate. In 1694 CE (Genroku 7), it was designated as the head temple for the Shingon Ritsu sect across the eight provinces of the Kanto region. Although its buildings were destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake and the war damage of World War II, the temple was restored in the postwar period.
