藤堂家ゆかりの寺院で、歴代藩主の画や木像、墓所が点在しています。山門の左右には広大な墓所があり、南側には石仏が並ぶ八十八ヵ所巡りの道や多くの祠があります。奥にはかつて池があった場所や、舟遊びの伝承がある場所など、歴史を感じる境内となっています。
