The shrine's predecessor was a Tenjin shrine enshrined by the Akai clan to protect the castle town. It was relocated to its current site in 1595 CE (Bunroku 4). Before the Edo period, it was under the management of Hojo-ji Temple. In 1641 CE (Kaneiro 18), the precincts were expanded and the shrine buildings were reconstructed. In 1910, Yasaka Shrine, located to the north, was merged into this shrine.
