Aoba Shrine

〒981-0916 宮城県仙台市青葉区青葉町7−1

4.1(861)

One of the five shrines in the Sendai Gosha Meguri pilgrimage route, this shrine enshrides Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain.

History

Founded in 1874, the shrine enshrines Takefuruhiko-no-Mikoto, the divine title of Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain. It was established using part of the grounds of Tōshō-ji Temple, and the current shrine buildings were completed in 1927. Within the precincts, there is a Soreisha (ancestral spirit shrine) dedicated to Masamune's retainers, and the Aihime Shrine, which enshrines his principal wife, Aihime, is also co-enshrined here.
