In 1004 CE (Kanko 1), the monk Gyoen rebuilt the site of the Ichijo Kitabe-do and renamed it Gyouganji. Guided by a dream, Gyoen received a sacred tree from the vicinity of the Kamo Shrine and personally carved it into a statue of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon). The temple is the 19th station of the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and is the only nuns' temple among the 33 stations.
