According to old shrine records, the shrine was built during the Eastern Expedition of Emperor Ojin (Japan's Divine Warrior). It is said to have been restored in 552 CE (Kinto 13) by Soga Inada. The shrine suffered severe damage from the Hoei Eruption but was fully restored in 1780 CE (An'ei 9). The current shrine buildings were rebuilt in 1823 CE (Bunsei 6).
