The direct beginning is considered to be the establishment of Kaita-bo in 1550 CE (Bunmei 19) by Shonnyu, which led to the formation of the Kaita dojo of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha. In 1583 CE (Tensho 11), it was designated as a new head temple by Kennyo. In 1607 CE (Keicho 12), it was granted the temple name 'Gansenzu-ji' by Junnyu of the Nishi Hongan-ji (West Hongan-ji).
