The shrine is said to have been founded in 903 CE (Engi 3) when Sugawara no Kanemori, a Hida official, mourned the death of his father, Sugawara no Michizane, and enshrined a wooden statue he had carved himself. It was later revived during the Tensho era by Miki Motosuna, and the shrine buildings were reconstructed in 1645 by Kanamori Shigeyori.
