Iyama-ji Kannon-do (Iyama-ji Kannon Hall)
高山市千島町494
A Shingon Buddhist temple located in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, enshrining Avalokiteshvara (Kannon) as its principal image. During the Edo period, it was venerated as the foremost of the Hida Seven Kannon (the Seven Kannon of Hida).
History
Legend holds that the temple originated when Asahina Saburo Yasushige, who was defeated in the Heiji Rebellion, established the Reiso-in. It was converted into a temple in 1339 CE (Rei-o 2). It was revived in 1445 CE (Bun-an 2), but was later destroyed by Miki Motosuna. It was subsequently re-established in 1604 CE (Keicho 9) by Zenko of the Shingon sect. During the Edo period, it was venerated as the first station of the Hida Seven Kannon.
