Founded in 1244 CE (Kangen 1) by Kawagoe Tsune-shige, the head of the Kawagoe clan, and established by the Great Acharya (Dai Ajari) Enkei Boshi. Originally a training ground for Esoteric Buddhism, it was converted from the Tendai sect to the Soto sect in 1535 CE (Bunmei 4). Tokugawa Ieyasu stopped by during his entry into the Kanto region and bestowed upon the temple a grant of ten koku of rice.
