History
The shrine is said to have been founded in 789 CE (Enryaku 8), during the reign of Emperor Suinin (the 10th emperor). The original main hall was destroyed by a great flood and drifted until it came to rest at the current location, which led to the area being named 'Omori' (Great Forest). In 1872 CE (Meiji 5), the shrine was renamed Katori Shrine. After the worship hall was completely destroyed by a typhoon in 1954 CE (Shōwa 29), it was rebuilt in 1955 CE (Shōwa 30).
