The enshrined deity appears in the myth of the Transfer of the Land to Izumo. Following the command of Amaterasu Omikami, he requested the transfer of the land from Okuninushi-no-Kami. Together with Takemikazuchi-no-Kami, he pacified Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni (the central land of reeds) and returned to report to Amaterasu Omikami. It was the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of the Shimosa Province. Before the Meiji period, it was worshipped under the title 'Jingu'. In 1942 CE (Showa 17), it was designated as a Chokusaisha (Imperial Worship Shrine).
