In 1839 CE (Tenpo 10), the founder Koun took refuge in the head temple of the Ogival school and was granted the temple name 'Koun-ji' upon opening the Inada Dojo (training ground). In 1898 CE (Meiji 31), the second abbot, Kaju, constructed the main hall. The hall was rebuilt in 1949 CE (Shōwa 24), and the current structure was completed in 2008 CE (Heisei 20).
