During the Edo period, it served as a place of debate for the eleven Shingon monastic academies in the Kanto region, producing many learned monks. The temple also has a connection as the memorial temple for Hijikata Toshizo, the vice-chief of the Shinsengumi. Within the precincts, there is a bronze statue of Hijikata Toshizo and a monument to the two heroes who died for their loyalty.
