This temple is the successor to the Mino Kokubunji (National Monastery), which was established during the Nara period by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. After burning down in 887 CE (Ninna 3), it was revived in 1615 CE (Genna 1) with a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) excavated from the ground as the main object of veneration. Although the temple declined around the late 12th century, it has been passed down to the present day as a quasi-special head temple of the Koyasan Shingon Sect.
