The shrine's origins date back to the Kan'en period (1243–1247 CE), when Wada Kotaro Yoshinobu invited Kumano Gongen to worship. Originally located in the Enoki Forest within Takasaki Castle grounds, it was relocated to its current site at Suwa Shrine by the Ii clan, lords of the Takasaki Domain. During the Meiji era, 37 small shrines were merged into this one, and it was renamed 'Takasaki Shrine'. It was designated as a Kensha (prefectural shrine) in 1925 (Taisho 14).
