Legend holds that Minamoto no Yoriyoshi prayed to the deities of Mount Togachi and Mount Gassan for victory in battle. As a votive offering for his triumph, he built a shrine building in Yamagata, Mogami District, and invited a branch spirit in 1063 CE (Kohei 6). During the Tensho period, Mogami Yoshiaki established the Shingon sect temple Jodo-in as the attendant temple (Betto). Thereafter, the shrine received patronage from the Mogami clan and the lords of the Yamagata Domain, the Torii and Mizuno clans. It was elevated to the rank of Kenja (Prefectural Shrine) during the Meiji era and added to the list of Special Shrines in 1961 CE (Showa 36).
