Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine)

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is a Hachiman shrine located in Yukinoshita, Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is also known as Kamakura Hachimangu. Founded in the late 11th century as the guardian deity of the Minamoto clan, it subsequently became the protective deity of the Kamakura samurai. Today, it is highly recognized in the Kanto region as a shrine associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, among Hachiman shrines nationwide. The shrine grounds are designated as a National Historic Site. Its former official rank was Kokhei Chusha (National Shrine of Middle Rank), and it was listed as a Hyakubyo Shrine (special list shrine) under the Association of Shinto Shrines. However, as of 2024, it is proceeding with procedures to withdraw from the Association of Shinto Shrines (see below).
