Makata Shrine

〒286-0003 千葉県成田市台方 字稷山1

4.4(741)

A Shikinaisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki) located in Daikata, Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. It serves as the head shrine of the 'Makata Juuhachasha' (Eighteen Makata Shrines) found across the former Inba District.

History

The shrine's origins are said to date back to the 42nd year of Emperor Keiko's reign, when Yamato Takeru visited the area and enshrined a mirror. Later, the Inba Kuni-no-Miyatsuko (provincial governor), Itsukuri-no-Mikoto, constructed the shrine buildings and enshrined Himuka-no-Mikoto. In the 16th year of Empress Suiko's reign, Hiwada-Hikohiko-no-Mikoto transferred Wakumusubi-no-Kami to the current site in Daikata, Narita City. The shrine was later renamed Makata Shrine because the surrounding region became known as a producer of hemp (asa).
