Founded in 1665 as the ancestral temple by Tadaaki Okitsura, the first lord of the Kokura Okitsura domain. In 1679, the second lord, Tadao Okitsura, relocated it to its current site. During the Kokura War in 1866, the temple was set on fire and burned down, but only the head of the main statue survived the flames. The body was later reconstructed and enshrined.
