Ryugukuji
藤沢市片瀬3丁目13−37
A Nichiren sect head temple (spiritual site) built on the site of the Ryuguku execution ground, known as the location of the Ryuguku Persecution, one of the four major persecutions faced by the Nichiren sect.
History
It is said that the temple originated when Nichiho, a disciple of Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect, built a hall called Shifukida to enshrine the 'skin used to cover the head' and a statue of Nichiren at the spiritual site of the 'Ryuguku Persecution,' where Nichiren was spared execution at the Ryuguku execution ground. In 1599 CE (Keicho 4), Shimamura Saimon donated temple lands, and the temple's full-scale architecture was established. It was maintained through a rotation system until the Meiji era, but restoration efforts progressed after the war, and it is now also attracting attention as a tourist destination.
