Dainichi-ji (Great Sun Temple), also known as Takaku-in on Mount Hokkai, is a temple of the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism located in Kōnan City, Kōchi Prefecture. According to tradition, the temple was founded during the Tenpyō era when Empress Kōgen ordered the monk Gyōki to carve an image of Mahāvairocana and construct a hall. In the sixth year of the Kōnin era (815 CE), Kūkai is said to have carved an image of Medicine Buddha (Yakushi Nyorai) from a camphor tree and restored the temple, which had fallen into disrepair. The temple was closed during the Meiji era due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, but it was re-established in 1884 CE (Meiji 17).
