Abiko-yama Kannon-ji (Abiko-yama Kannon Temple)
〒558-0014 大阪府大阪市住吉区我孫子4丁目1−20
The head temple of the Kannon-shu sect, located in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, and commonly known as Abiko Kannon. It is regarded as the oldest sacred site of Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion) in Japan.
History
In 546 CE (Kei 7), a hall was built to enshrine a statue of Kannon Bosatsu that had been bestowed upon the clan of I-Ame-Wo-Hiko. It is said that in 607 CE (Suiko 14), Prince Shotoku established Kannon-ji. The temple reached its peak during the Edo period. In the Meiji era, it was separated from the Shingon-ji (a temple attached to a shrine) of Dai-Ira Shrine due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism. In 1947, it became independent from the Shingon-shu Yamaga-ha sect and founded the Kannon-shu sect.
