It is said to have been founded in the Kamakura period by the monk Ninsho in the vicinity of Mabashi in Kozuke Province. It was later relocated by the Chiba clan to the area of present-day Chuo Ward, Chiba City, where it continued to receive the clan's patronage. The temple was destroyed by fire during air raids near the end of World War II but was relocated and rebuilt in the postwar period in the present-day Toride-machi area of Inage Ward.
