It is said that in 701 CE (Daihō 1), the monk Dōkyō founded Manmyō-ji Temple on Mount Onsen and enshrined the Four-Faced Bodhisattva as the guardian deity of the mountain. During the Meiji era, the shrine was renamed Chikuzi Kunitsu-mitama Shrine, but in 1915 CE (Taishō 4), it reverted to the name Onsen Shrine. The following year, it was elevated to the status of a Prefectural Shrine.
