The shrine's origins are said to date back to 1085 CE (Tenki 3) of the late Heian period, when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi invited the deities of Kumano Shrine to pray for victory in battle. Subsequently, Minamoto no Yoritomo relocated and constructed Kumano Shinmiya Shrine at its current location. Revered as a guardian deity by the Shinmiya clan, many sacred objects were donated. However, the buildings collapsed during the 1611 Aizu earthquake, and the current worship hall (Nagadana) was rebuilt in 1614 by Gamu Tadayoshi.
