The shrine was founded in 1378 when Zen master Ryōan enshrined a branch spirit (bunrei) from Akihabara Sanjōbō Dai Gongen in Tōtōmi Province. During the Edo period, it received the patronage of the hatamoto (direct vassal of the shogun) Yamauchi Kazuyoshi, and the shrine buildings were reconstructed in 1661. Subsequently, it became a place of prayer (kiganjo) for the Kishu Tokugawa family.
