History
明治2年、秋田藩主佐竹義堯が戊辰戦争に殉じた官軍戦没者を祀ったのが起源。明治32年に秋田市千秋公園に再建され「秋田招魂社」と称したが、昭和14年に内務大臣指定護国神社として「秋田県護国神社」に改称され、翌年に旧秋田城址へ遷座した。平成2年に過激派による放火で全焼したが、平成4年に現在地で再建された。
