Founded in 1687 CE (Joho 4) by the wealthy merchant Akiyama Jirokuro to commemorate his deceased daughter. Initially named Tamonji, it adopted the name and relocated the mountain gate of a Tamonji temple established by Minamoto no Yoritomo. In 1689 CE (Genroku 2), the name was changed to Koshakuin.
