It is said to have been founded in 755 CE (Tenpyo Shoho 7) by Ryo-ben, the first abbot of Todaiji, as an imperial temple commissioned by Emperor Shomu. It was destroyed by a fire in 818 CE (Genkei 2) but was revived in 824 CE (Genkei 8) by Anran, flourishing as a mountain temple of the esoteric Buddhist tradition. It was re-established as Myo-o-in in 1885 CE (Meiji 18) and as Oyama-ji in 1915 CE (Taisho 4).
