The founding date is unknown, but there is a theory that it was relocated from Ujiyamada in Ise Province in the 23rd year of Emperor Yuryaku's reign. It was previously known as 'Shikinaidai Takaza Shrine' (a major shrine listed in the Engishiki codex).
