Founded during the Kamakura period by Koya Isen, the temple flourished under the patronage of the Hōjō clan of the Shioda lineage. Although it declined after the Muromachi period, it was revived as a Soto sect temple around 1580 CE (Tenshō 8) by Takayama Junkei.
