Founded by the monk Koki. It was originally known as Shinkokuji in the former village of Miyai, Katsuura District, but was later moved to the banks of the Ryushi pond within Tokushima Castle and renamed Sokkyobo. It relocated to its current site during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644 CE).
