Founded in 1874, the shrine enshrines Takefuruhiko-no-Mikoto, the divine title of Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain. It was established using part of the grounds of Tōshō-ji Temple, and the current shrine buildings were completed in 1927. Within the precincts, there is a Soreisha (ancestral spirit shrine) dedicated to Masamune's retainers, and the Aihime Shrine, which enshrines his principal wife, Aihime, is also co-enshrined here.
