History

The shrine's origins date back to the second year of Jinku (852 CE), when Hojii Yasumasa descended from Yamashiro Province and enshrined the three deities of the sun, moon, and stars in a rock cave. Because Hojii Yasumasa taught the cultivation of hemp, the area and the shrine came to be known as 'Aoma' (green hemp), and the divine crest became a hemp leaf. In the second year of Tenwa (1682 CE), Tachibana Kaito, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, visited the shrine. He was subsequently enshrined there after demonstrating miraculous healing powers for stroke.

What visitors say

Known as a deity beneficial for eye health, the shrine offers eye-related omamori (protective charms) and fan-shaped omikuji (fortune slips). During the Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the New Year) period, the grounds are lively with food stalls and bonfires. Parking is available along the road, and there is a place within the precincts where visitors can draw water. The availability of Goshuin (calligraphic seal stamps) may vary depending on the season.
