According to shrine tradition, it was founded at the foot of Kamiyama in the 8th year of Emperor Suinin's reign (January). It was relocated to its current site in 865 CE (Jogan 7). From the late Heian period onward, it was recognized as the Ichinomiya of Kai Province and received devout reverence from the Takeda clan. During the Meiji era, it was classified as a Kokubei Chusha (National Shrine of Middle Rank). Currently, it is listed as a Hyakken Jinja (Special List Shrine) under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
