According to shrine tradition, the shrine was founded in the 3rd year of Emperor Chūnin's reign. Until the 1st year of the Daidō era, the deity was enshrined at the Yamamiya Asama Shrine. In that same year, the deity was transferred to the current location. In the 7th year of the Jōgan era, the Asama Myojin Shrine was established in Yashiro District, Kai Province, and designated as an official shrine, citing neglect of rituals intended to quell the damage caused by the eruption of Mount Fuji, based on the oracle of Ban Shintadzu. It is believed that the shrine originally served as a Yamamiya Shrine dedicated to a sacred mountain in the south, but later moved to a Saremiya (subordinate shrine) near the provincial capital due to the development of the Kofu Basin, at which point the deity was granted the specific status of Asama.
