In 1160 CE (Eiryaku 1), Taira no Kiyomori founded the shrine at the command of Emperor Go-Shirakawa as the guardian shrine of the Hosho-in Palace, enshrining Kumano Gongen from the Kumano Sanzan mountains in Kii Province. During the Edo period, it was revived by Tokuhoin, the Empress of Emperor Go-Mizunoo. In 1673 CE (Kanbun 13), the main hall (honden) was rebuilt by Prince Dokuan Shogo-in.
