The temple was named Atsushi-ji (Standing Stone Temple), and its mountain name was set as Mount Senzu, to perform rites of gratitude for a blue stone that was said to have protruded from the ground in a single night. During the Edo period, it received a vermilion seal (an official certificate of imperial or daimyo favor) from Tokugawa Iemitsu.
