It is said that the shrine originated when the Sanuki Kimbe clan reclaimed this land and enshrined their patron deity, Ama-tama-no-Mikoto. By the early Heian period, it was already renowned enough to be classified as a Meishin (famous kami) shrine, being the only shrine in Sanuki Province entrusted with the Meishin-sai ritual at that time. It was relocated to its current site in 1004 CE (Kanko 1) and rebuilt by Ikoma Masatoshi in 1620 CE (Genroku 6).
