During the Asuka period, the deity was enshrined prior to the opening of Mount Omine by En no Gyoja, serving as the tutelary deity of Mount Yayama. Tradition holds that Emperor Tenmu prayed for victory in battle and made offerings to the shrine. Beneath the shrine building lies an Iwasaki (a sacred flat rock) where Emperor Jimmu is said to have received the power of the spoken word. Due to the Haibutsu Kishaku (the anti-Buddhist movement) in the Meiji era, the shrine, which had been known as Hiba-yama Shihon-ji Temple during the Edo period with Benten as its principal image, was separated from Buddhism.
