The date of founding is unknown. It was originally called 'Sanjiban Shrine.' During the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, the enshrined deity was changed from Sanjiban-gami, which had strong syncretic characteristics, to Uga-no-Mitama-no-Mikoto, and the shrine was renamed 'Inari Shrine.' In 1907, it was formally merged into Suwa Shrine on paper, but the shrine buildings and rituals continued to exist, and it was re-established in 1957.
