It is said to have been enshrined prior to 1570 CE (Genki 1). A Shinto shrine was established on the grounds of Ise-yama prior to 1711 CE (Shōtoku 1). In 1826 CE (Bunsei 9), Shimura Bun-no-jō invited the enshrined deity from Konpira-gū (Kotohira Grand Shrine) in Shikoku, leading to the creation of a combined shrine merging the Shinto shrine and Kotohira Shrine. In 1980, the shrine name was changed to Kotohira Shrine, and a new main hall was completed in 2011.
