The shrine's origins date back to 502 CE, when the Great Deity (Ookami) performed flood control measures on the western side of Mount Tsukuba to aid people suffering from water disasters, leading to their enshrinement. In 1426, the shrine was relocated to Sakai, Shimotsuke City, and in 1964, it was moved to its current location in Tomozaki, Tsukuba City.
