The original shrine (Genmiya) was washed away by a flood in 1276 CE (Kenji 2) and drifted to Shimada, where it was relocated to its current site in 1689 CE (Genroku 2). It was elevated to the status of a prefectural shrine (Kensha) in 1908 CE (Meiji 41) and was added to the Special List of Shrines by the Association of Shinto Shrines in 1966 CE (Shōwa 41).
