Founded in 1383 CE by Nichinjin, the founding patriarch of the Jindon-ryu branch, who was traveling through the Tokai region. From this point on, Yakushi-do took the name Jorinzan Honko-ji and became the center for the propagation of the Nichiren sect in the region. During the Edo period, it was granted the status of a temple with an income of 100,000 koku and was permitted to use the three-leafed mallow crest of the Tokugawa shogunal family.
