It is said to have been established in 931 CE (Jōhei 1) as an imperial commission temple for Taira no Masakado. Although it fell into ruin, the main deity was preserved and transmitted by Mikura Saburō Yoshihide. It was revived in 1219 CE (Jōkyū 1) by order of Oribe Tokihei, with Monk Gimon as the founding patriarch. The temple relocated to its current location around the 9th year of Genroku (1696 CE), and the Sanseido was built in 1763 CE (Bōryaku 13).
