Its origins lie in the founding of Sangetsu-ji (Mountain Stage Temple) by Kyomyo-o (Princess Kyomyo), wife of Fujiwara no Kamatari, who prayed for her recovery from illness. Following the relocation of the capital to Heijo-kyo (Nara) in 710 CE (Wado 3), Fujiwara no Fuhito moved the temple to its current location and named it Kofuku-ji (Kofukuji Temple). The central temple complex was constructed between the Wado and Yoro eras, and it is estimated that the Golden Hall was nearly complete around 714 CE (Wado 7).
